Our students work extremely hard inside and outside of the classroom. We are happy to be able to share some of their recent accomplishments with our community.
Firelands Elementary School
SpheroOlympics: Students from Mrs. Dempsey’s class attended the SpherOlympics in March to use their coding skills. Congratulations to our 4th grade team for their first place gold medal, and to our 5th grade team for their 3rd place bronze medal! Great job everyone!
3rd and 4th Grade Spelling Bee:
Twenty-two students competed on March 14th in our 3rd and 4th grade Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all student participants! Our top 5 spellers are Layla McGuire, Garrison Lee, Ella Rivera, AJ Herbas, and Jack Shepherd. Our top speller —two years in a row— is Jack Shepherd. The top 4 spellers will compete in the County Spelling Bee on May 2nd.

Congrats to our 5/6 grade Spelling Bee participants! The top 4 students will represent Firelands in the Lorain County Spelling Bee on May 9th at Midview Middle School!

Congratulations to Emily Shupe. On March 17th, Emily took 1st place at the Girls State Wrestling Championship, after a long year of hard work. Her outstanding record for the year is 29-0!
Hailey and Logan Urban
Congratulations to Logan and Hailey! They competed in the NFAA National Indoor Archery Tournament in Cincinnati on March 15-17th. Results came back for the Great Lake Sectionals and Logan Placed 2nd. This past weekend they both participated in the OAA State 300 Championship Hailey Placed 3rd in her class and Logan Placed 1st in his Class.
They recently competed at the National Archery Competition and Logan placed 5th in the Nation and Hailey placed 19th in the Nation!
Telaysia Kraus and Aiden Bokulich
Congratulations to Telaysia Krause and Aiden Bokulich for their outstanding essays in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest sponsored by the VFW. Telaysia won first place and Aiden was awarded third place. Both 6th graders won cash prizes with their themed essays on the topic: “Why I Honor the Flag.”

Congratulations to our students for earning Honor or Merit Role Distinction. Students who earn a 3.5 or above earn Honor Role Status, and students who earn a 3.0 to 3.499 for earn Merit Role Distinction. These honors also include students at the JVS, but not at LCCC due to the fact that all grades are based on the second semester. Click here to see the listing. FFA Proficiency and Star Awards
We are proud to announce that we have 5 members apply for proficiency and star awards this year. Star Awards are reserved for the best overall SAE projects in the state. Congratulation to the following proficiency award competitors:
- Steven Jessel: Outdoor Recreation Placement-3rd in district, Honorable Mention State Level
- Katelyn Konicek: Equine Management Placement – 1st in district, bronze state rating
- Sean Miller: Fruit Production Placement – 1st in district, top 4 in state finalist
- Zach Born applied for 7 proficiency awards, a school record! He is top 4 in the state in 5 of 7, also shattering the old Firelands FFA record for top-fours from an individual!
-Diversified Ag Production Placement – 1st in district, state silver rating
-Diversified Crop Production Placement – 3rd in district, state bronze rating
-Ag Mechanics Repair Placement – district placing to be determined, Top 4 in state finalist
-Beef Production Placement-1st in district, top 4 in state finalist

-Forage Production Placement – 1st in district, top 4 in state finalist
-Grain Crop Production Placement – 1st in district, top 4 in state finalist.
Megan Brandich: A State Star Farmer finalist for the second year in a row. She will interview at her farm for final placing.

Congratulations to Lilly Dempsey and Macey Butchko for representing Firelands in the Oberlin Rotary speaking contest. Macey received 2nd and Lilly 3rd overall. Congratulations ladies!
Congratulations to the following girls basketball players for their post season awards: Peyton Phillips- 1st team PAC, 1st team Lorain County Div. 2, Honorable mention Northeast district, Emily Stewart- honorable mention PAC, 2nd team Lorain County Div. 2, Honorable Mention Northeast district, Megan Sutton- Honorable Mention Lorain County Div.2, Abbey Schmitz- Honorable Mention Lorain County Div.2, and Isabel Solowiej for winning the Dick Killen Scholarship through the Lorain County Girls Basketball Coaches Association. Great job Lady Falcons!
Congratulations to Payton on becoming a 3 time State placer at the OHSAA Wrestling Championship at 120 lbs. ! He finished on the podium in each of his first three seasons. Payton earned Division II All-Ohio Recognition at the Division II State Wrestling Championships last weekend.
ART STUDENT WORK HEADED TO COLUMBUS – Sat. Mar. 2 was the regional judging for the prestigious Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition. This competition is more rigorous than the Lorain Co. Regional Scholastic show, which is just 3 counties. From the over 1400 works entered, only 200 advanced to the “state playoff” round of judging in Columbus. – The official 2019 Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition will be in April-May at the Rhodes Office Tower. Senior Bailey Borer, who is also an AP Art Studio student, has 2 photographs in the “playoffs”! Her works are headed to Columbus as Firelands is only one of three Lorain County schools to be sending works to Columbus. Congratulations Bailey
FHS at OMEA Competition
CONGRATULATIONS to the FHS Concert and Select Choirs and the Firelands Band for receiving Superior ratings at the OMEA District Large Group Competition! All your hard work has paid off!
Alex has been named 2019 Preseason All-State-Division II First Team by PBR Ohio.
The list is formed based on a multitude of factors, some weighted more than others. The factors include 2018 performance, improvement shown at summer/winter showcases, 2019 projection, coaches recommendations, strength of competition, team performance, etc. Read the full article here.
Congratulations to Breanna for her outstanding patriotic essay. She was a finalist in the Patriot’s Pen writing competition sponsored by the VFW which included other Lorain County Schools. Breanna was honored with a diner and awards ceremony where she was awarded a framed certificate and cash prize at the Oberlin VFW Post 6273. Brianna won first place for her themed essay entitled “Why My Vote Matters”.
Academic Challenge Team
Congratulations to Alessandra Davis, Michael Durdak and Sam Formholtz for representing Firelands on Academic Challenge! This talented team beat Minerva and Tuslaw in a fantastic contest. #FalconPride
National Honor Society
Congratulations to the newly inducted members of the Firelands National Honor Society. Over 50 new students became members of NHS on March 25th.
Zach Baldwin: March Student of the Month
Congratulations to Zachary Baldwin, who was named the Firelands Lions Club March Student of the Month. Zach is invited to a Lions Club meeting and dinner, where they will recognize him for this honor. Zachary is a member of both the Cross-Country and Track teams, and is also an honor student who will be attending Case Western Reserve University in the fall. Congratulations to Zach on a well-deserved honor.
Nathan and Olivia Hammond
Nathan and Olivia recently competed in the OYM Fine Arts competition in Dayton. Fine Arts is a ministry that allows students to discover and develop their gifts. Students may present or submit entries into the divisions of Art, Communication, Drama, Exhibition, Instrumental, Vocal and Writing. Fine Arts in helping students in Ohio to discover, develop, and deploy their gifts in the ARTS.
1,500 students from all over Ohio competed in a myriad of fine arts categories. Nathan and Olivia placed very well:
