Student Achievement – January 2019

We continue to be proud of our students and their various achievements! Our students work hard inside and outside of the classrooms and we are happy to share their accomplishments with our community.

FES Students at Mock Trial

On December 6th, Mrs. Dempsey’s 5th grade gifted reading class participated in a Mock Trial experience sponsored by the Educational Service Center of Lorain County. The event was held at the Lorain County Justice Center in Elyria, where gifted classes in grades 5 through 8 from area school districts met to try their cases in real courtrooms, with real judges and attorneys who were willing to share their time and expertise with the students.

Mrs. Szemplak’s Advanced Art Class

Students in Mrs. Szemplak’ Advanced Art Class submitted artwork to the Lorain County Scholastic art show. There were over 1,700 art works submitted to this contest and only 500 were chosen. SAMS had 6 students receive awards!

The following students received awards:

Grace Gilles-Honorable Mention, Kalei Houston-Silver Key, Cohen Overstreet-Silver Key, Bella Simmons-Silver Key, Savannah Leverknight-Silver key, and Lydia Dougan received the highest award, a Gold Key.
Come see their artwork displayed in a show at the Stocker Arts Center from January 15-February  22. Congratulations! We are so proud of you!

Falcon Robotics

Mr. Latto is the coach for the Falcon Robotics Team. The team designs, builds, programs and competes in official VEX Robotic competitions. The students had an excellent day at the Pioneer Classic Robotic Tournament and The Chronicle Telegram caught one of our teams in action!

Both teams were ranked among the top teams after 6 intense qualifying rounds with the first team consisting of Aaron Kirk, Rylan Votruba, John Kovach, Trenton Jones, Xavier Harper, Grace Bates, Aubrey West, and Haylee Shick making the quarter finals and the 2nd team consisting of Jeremy Partlow, Daniel Dempsey, Andrew Brown-Carroll, Joseph Montgomery, Asher Widener, and Mya Braley making the semi-finals of the tournament. The next competition is Saturday, February 16th at Lorain High School where they will be competing against over 60 teams from all over Ohio.

Blanket Club

Mrs. Neal is working with a group of students that has volunteered to make blankets that will be donated to The Valor Home of Lorain County.  FLSD has been identified by the State of Ohio as a Purple Star School. The Purple Star Award is given for military-friendly schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. January Student of the Month

Congratulations to Alex Brill on being named the Firelands Lions Club Student of the Month. Alex will be honored at a Lions Club Dinner later this month. Alex was nominated by Mrs. Callahan.

FHS Honor Band

Five FHS Students, accompanied by Mr. Wiley, participated in the Kent State Honors Band this past weekend in Kent. Congratulations to the following students on a successful weekend. Micheal Carty, Chance Baldwin, Daniel Giacopelli, Lynn Born, and Liam Lockhart.
