Alyssa (Turton) Cox – Class of 2011

Alyssa (nee Turton)  married Colten Cox on July 22, 2017.

Alyssa graduated from FHS in 2011 and then graduated from Defiance College with her Bachelor of Arts in 2014 . She completed her MBA in 2016 from Defiance, as well. She now work as an Event Coordinator at Oakwood Resort on Lake Wawasee in Syracuse, Indiana.

Her husband, Colten, is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana and is now a Paramedic with Lutheran EMS in Warsaw, Indiana and also serves as a Combat Medic with the Indiana Army National Guard.

They currently reside in Syracuse, Indiana with their two dogs, Bane & Jax.

Amy graduated from Southeast Missouri State University fulfilling a promise that she made to her parents 29 years ago. Best wishes to Amy for whatever she decides to tackle next!

Sam Dempsey – Class of 2017

sam eagleSam Dempsey of Boy Scout Troop 427 and 2017 graduate of FHS, has achieved the highest rank in scouting, the rank of Eagle. Sam was honored at a special court of honor ceremony held during the summer at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Amherst. Sam had the distinguished honor of being the troop’s 100th Eagle Scout.  

Sam’s scouting career began in 2006 in Cub Scout Pack 429, where he earned the highest rank of Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light, in 2010.  He then chose to bridge to Troop 427, where he has held the positions of Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Instructor, and Troop Guide during his time as a boy scout.  Sam earned 40 merit badges, 21 of which were required for the rank of Eagle. He was also elected to the Order of the Arrow, the honor society of Boy Scouts.

Sam’s Eagle Service Project involved painting the foyer of the Main Street Amherst building in downtown Amherst. Along with family members and a fellow scout as helpers, he prepped and painted the top half of the 11ft. walls in the historic building.  

Sam’s future plans include attending the University of Akron and encouraging his two younger brothers to achieve the rank of Eagle.

Firelands Alumni

Author Duane C Miller – Class of 1971

Congratulations to Duane C. Miller, class of 1971, on the publication of his book, Survivor. The book was published by Discovery House this past year. Survivor; A Story of Tragedy, Guilt, and Grace tells the true story of the 1970 Canadian wilderness canoeing accident that claimed the life of his three friends. According to Karen Campbell Media, ” Miller gives an honest account of the canoeing accident, his part in the event, and the struggles he experienced afterward.”

The Book is available by going to Duane’s website and also on Amazon. Autographed copies are available at Apple Hill (corner of Vermilion road and Rt 113 in Amherst). Duane is the brother of Rodger and David Miller, owners of Apple Hill and Miller Orchards.  Congratulations Duane!

Alyssa Alcorn – Class of 2012

AlcornCongratulations to Alyssa Alcorn! Earlier this month, she was sworn in as a new member of the Village council of South Amherst, Ohio! She studied Public Advocacy at Ohio University as a member of the Class of 2016 and was a Senior Intern at Leadership Lorain County.

Sonsee Schramm –  Class of 1984

sonseeSonsee Schramn, long time Firelands resident celebrates her third anniversary with Howard Hanna. In her first year she earned “Rookie of the Year” and her business has been growing every year since.

Sonsee and her husband, Harlan, grew up in the Firelands District. They raised their two children as Falcons, too. Sonsee states, “I love this area and know the neighborhood extremely well.”

Steven G Abraham – Class of 1994

Congratulations to Steve Abraham on his newest position with the Denver District Attorney’s office. He has achieved the position of Chief Deputy District Attorney and was recently sworn in with family members present. He is now the lead attorney and supervisor of all staff and cases assigned to the Denver District Courtroom. Duties include case screening and review, filing of charges, warrant reviews, criminal investigations, community outreach, on-call homicide response, and to law enforcement, District Attorneys and staff. Steve has held various positions with the Denver office since 2006, previously he was with the Boulder District Attorney’s Office.

After high school, Steve completed his undergraduate work at The University of Toledo. From there he entered The Ohio State-Oxford Summer Law Program in Oxford, England in the summer of 2000. He completed his education at The Ohio State University, Mortiz College of Law in May of 2002.

Congratulations to Casey Morrissette-she was named the Female Athlete of the Week for Mount Union!
