Firelands Bands Take Highest Honors
One the morning of May 12th, two buses filled with the members of the Firelands Concert and Jazz Bands left Firelands High School bound for Hershey, PA. Upon arriving in Hershey, the students had some time to enjoy Hershey Chocolate World before loading the buses again for their most important stop of the weekend – the Music in the Parks Competition. After a quick change and getting instruments from the buses, the students filed in to the competition venue.
The Firelands Concert Band performed first sounding amazing in the performance auditorium – it was truly magical to hear these students as they performed several selections for the competition judges. Soon after, the Firelands Jazz Band also took the stage. With their classmates in the audience, the Jazz Band also made some magic and took us all on a musical adventure. After both performances, the students had to wait until the next day to learn their results.
On a rain-soaked afternoon, all seven competing bands gathered in the Hershey Amphitheatre for the awards presentations. Again, our students filed in and took their seats, cheering other bands along the way and enjoying the camaraderie that comes from being in “The Band”.
After a well-deserved recognition of all the Directors (including our very own Mr. Wiley) for their efforts, student representatives from each participating group took the stage. First up, Concert Band Awards – First Place went to Firelands High School Concert Band. Next up, Jazz Band Awards – once again, First Place went to Firelands High School. On to overall honors, Best Overall Concert Band – Firelands High School!
Music in the Parks saves the most coveted award for the very end – it is called the Esprit de Corps Award. As he prepared to present the award, the master of ceremonies described the award and who receives it. It is the award presented to the group that performs at a highly professional level when they do not realize they are being watched (not just on the stage). They are the group that drops individual egos to become a true ensemble, not just a bunch of soloists. They allow themselves to congratulate and celebrate all the other musicians for their efforts, recognizing everyone works very hard and the need to stick together as musicians to further promote the arts in education. For the third time in their three appearances at the Music in the Parks Competition, Firelands High School was awarded the Esprit de Corps Award!
Congratulations to the entire Firelands High School Band, Mr. Wiley and his staff on an outstanding accomplishment!
Their next performances will be on Memorial Day weekend as the Mighty Falcon Marching Band participates in three community Memorial Day Parades – be sure to let these students know our community supports them as they pass along the parade routes!
The Firelands Community should be very proud to be represented by these amazing young people, not only do they perform at a very high level as musicians, they are also truly great examples of the youth of our community.
