The 2nd Annual Holiday Preview was held at Firelands High School on December 8, 2016. This community event is quickly becoming a favorite holiday tradition! Although the weather was not as warm as we had hoped, we were pleased that our attendance easily doubled from last year!
Retired staff members and senior citizens from our community were invited into Firelands High School in appreciation of their influence on our district. Our community members and retirees from Camden, Brownhelm, South Amherst and FLSD gathered together for a fun morning! Our own Teen Leadership Corps volunteered to set up the venue, assist our guests, and help clean up. This group of students work to “Lead, Serve, Inspire the World” and they did a wonderful job at this event. Several of our guests commented on how much they appreciated this group of students and we couldn’t agree more!

Student soloists, Macey Butchko and Nathan Hammond entertained our guests as they arrived and while they ate brunch. Macey played piano and sang traditional Christmas carols while Nathan shared beautiful classical pieces with the audience. Their willingness to perform whenever asked is greatly appreciated!
After the welcome from Superintendent Mike Von Gunten, the Select Choir sang some of their Christmas pieces for our guests. The Select Choir is an audition only choir at FHS. The choir has extremely talented musicians who have a very busy touring schedule during December. Mrs. Wendy Johnson is the Choir Director for FLSD and does a wonderful job with all of her students.
Following our Select Choir, the eleven member Jazz Band (under the direction of Mr. Dustin Wiley) filled the room with several beautiful jazz pieces. This was a new addition at the Holiday Preview and it was a wonderful way to share jazz music with our guests! Well done students!
Finally, as a surprise for our guests, the 4th grade students came from the elementary school to share some of their Holiday music! This was the first time that these young Falcons sang on risers and sang together outside of their school building! Mrs. Julene Woods is the music/choir teacher at Firelands Elementary. The students did an outstanding job and were such fun to watch!
Thank you to all that were able to attend! We sincerely appreciate all of our community and retired staff members. We wish each of you the happiest of holidays!
If you would like to hear more holiday music, the Winter Holiday Concert will be held at Firelands High School on Thursday, December 15th at 7:00 pm. This free event is a combined FHS Band and Choir concert and is always a fabulous show!
