Under the Friday night lights, during the Mighty Falcon Marching Band’s halftime performance, you may see nine sparkling dots running around with flags in their hands. These dots are known as the Firelands High School Color Guard and they are impacting the Falcon community in a “flag”tastic way. This group of glittered covered gals are giving back to the community by adding a little sparkle to someone’s holiday. Throughout the year, the girls went through rigorous training each week using canned food in place of ordinary weights. The cans contain vegetables, fruit and other necessities. All girls contributed two new cans each week and by the end of their season, had boxes full of food to give to local families in need this holiday season. The canned goods, along with potatoes, fresh apples, rolls and a turkey, will be delivered to several Fireland families this upcoming holiday season. Sophomore, Halli Kromer states, “Giving from the guard means a lot to me because it gives me a chance to give back to the families of the people that I am around everyday”. The idea, originally created by first year head coach Donna Boucher, was praised by all girls involved. The chance to give back to the small community meant a great deal to each participant; doing what they love just made the idea even better. It is no secret that Giving from the Guard will carry on for many marching seasons to come.
