The arrival of winter is inevitable, as is the poor weather conditions. To best prepare for the season, we will again share information regarding our District’s policy for closing school due to inclement weather. The Superintendent may close the school, dismiss students early or delay the opening of school in the event of hazardous weather.
When severe weather exists, we typically begin monitoring roads and facilities at 4:00 a.m. The District makes a great effort to determine if closure is necessary between 5:30 – 6:00 a.m. In some circumstances, the decision can be made further in advance (i.e. the night before), but most often a final decision comes in the early morning hours on the day of the closure. Road conditions, building and grounds conditions, air temperature, and weather forecasts are all taken into consideration when determining if school will be closed due to bad weather.
As a reminder, schools must comply with minimum hours of instruction each year. The district may extend its school year if the school closes enough that it is near the minimum instructional hours or falls short of instruction time. Extremely Important: If your telephone number or custodial information has changed, please contact your building secretary to notify her of the change(s). If you have made a change to your phone number, our data base must be updated in order for parent calls regarding weather delays or closures, to be initiated. In the event of a school closure, Firelands Local School District will post closure information on the District website and we will notify local media outlets. Parents have the option of utilizing our text alert system, (enroll through the portal) as well. Our district will also use its own telephone alert system to notify parents and staff of any school closures. Additionally, there are several local media outlets that provide free text alert service including WKYC Channel 3, WEWS NewsNet Channel 5 and Fox 8 Cleveland.
