Nathan Hammond, Concertmaster

Nathan Hammond

Nathan Hammond, a current 9th grade student at FHS, recently performed in the Fall Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra (NOYO) concert, with their Philharmonia Orchestra. The Philharmonia Orchestra is a pre-collegiate full symphonic ensemble.  The concert entitled A Night on Bald Mountain was held on October 25, 2015 in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

Nathan was named concertmaster for the performance serving as the lead violinist. As the violinist with the highest “rank”, he sat in the first chair, next to the conductor’s podium. Nathan led the orchestral tuning prior to the concert and customarily plays all of the violin solos within pieces. In addition, the concertmaster marks the orchestra’s scores with the appropriate bowings – so all the violinists are moving their bows and playing in unison.

Nathan - concertmaster

Earlier this year, Nathan auditioned for and was accepted into Credo. Credo is an intensive program of string study dedicated to combining high-level musical training with Christian mentorship and the opportunity for outreach and service to others. His time spent in the Credo Chamber Music program included devotion and a deeper understanding of music and the gifts that were given to him.

Nathan also participates in the Firelands High School Marching Band playing the trumpet. During his free time, he has been teaching himself to play the piano and enjoys writing music.  Having been accepted into the NOYO’s Young Composer Program, Nathan is learning more about music composition by also writing an original piece which will be performed in May 2016 at the Bop Stop in Cleveland.  Nathan also enjoys his sports – basketball is among his favorite and he has been busy preparing for the upcoming season tryouts.

Nathan continues his study of the violin under the guidance of Milan Vitek, professor of violin at Oberlin College Conservatory and also at the Oberlin Community Music School with Mary Ellen Price and Louise Zeitlin.  In the future, Nathan hopes to continue in a career which uses his special musical gifts in some way.

Nathan is the son of Pam and Doug Hammond and the brother to Noah and Olivia.
