Wrestling Update: The Firelands Wrestling team hosted its first Freestyle and Greco off-season program from April 7-May 14. The club is a branch of the Westside Freestyle and Greco Club which has host sites in two other locations: Lutheran West and Medina. This collaborative effort provided wrestlers from Cuyahoga, Lorain, and Medina county the opportunity to train with each other. The Firelands location typically hosted 18-24 wrestlers every Tuesday and Thursday. Additionally, we had world-class coaches: Tadaaki Hatta (National Champion- Oklahoma St. & U.S. Olympic Freestyle Coach), Steve Bartos (Buckeye Youth Coach, OAC Youth Team Champs), and Josh Walbom (Firelands Grad, Wrestles Greco-Roman for the U.S. Navy) frequently in attendance. Also, the club produced twelve (12) Freestyle and Greco State Tournament Qualifiers, six placed. In addition, Max Hertensteiner, Dj Childers, and Sean Lipscomb were selected to the Ohio Greco National Team, which travels to Fargo, North Dakota, in July. Sean qualified for the Freestyle squad and also was selected to join the Cadet (Freshman/Sophomore) National Dual team which will represent Ohio, in York, Pennsylvania, in June. Lastly, Coach Malave was selected as a member of the Ohio Cadet (Freshman/Sophomore) Greco Coaching Staff. He will be traveling with team Ohio to the National Championships, in July.
