Firelands High School Students Attend Junior Statesmen of America (JSA) Spring State in Columbus
Several FHS students attended JSA’s Ohio River Valley Spring State the weekend of April 25 & 26. Students from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee convened at the Ohio Statehouse Saturday, meeting in the same chambers and hearing rooms used by Ohio congressmen. Many of the group’s activities were held in the Statehouse Senate Chamber, where the students met and listened to speeches by Ohio Representation Jonathan Dever and Ohio Secretary of State John Husted. Both gentlemen took time for question and answer sessions from the students as well. During the two day event, the students presented, debated, and voted on new student written bills. Spring State is when the voting occurs for next year’s JSA student state officers, so campaigning and speeches were part of the agenda. Representing the Firelands High School Chapter this year at Spring State were Averi Cleary, Mason Hildebrandt, chapter president Garrett Hoffman, Abbe Gifford, Xavier Irizarry, and Jerund Gonzales (not in photo). The Junior Statesmen of America organization is a phenomenal way for youth to learn about our government, experiencing it firsthand.
