The Jim Solomon Memorial Wrestling Tournament will be held Saturday, January 17th at Firelands High School. The tournament will start at 10:00 a.m.
Solomon’s career with Firelands began 1971, when he accepted a teaching and football coaching opportunity. He launched a career that included being the athletics director and wrestling coach from 1985-2000. He was the driving force behind the creation of the first wrestling team at Firelands High School. He was the first head coach of the program and he coached wrestling for 15 years winning 100 dual meets and six conference titles. For 37 years at Firelands, Solomon was a science teacher; softball, football and wrestling coach and athletics director. He died at his home in 2010. He was 66 years old.
His dedication to athletics was well-known outside of Firelands. His obituary headline declared him a winner and a gentleman.
The tournament is held each year in his honor.
