PLTW (Project Lead The Way) students at SAMS recently completed their Hobby Organizer Design projects.
PLTW is an elective course designed to introduce middle grade students to engineering careers and skills. “Students get rigorous and relevant experiences through activity, project, and problem based learning. They use industry-leading technology to solve problems while gaining skills in communication, collaboration, critical-thinking, and creativity.” – www.pltw.org
Mr. Latto’s students worked on The Hobby Organizer Design project. This project required students to apply the Engineering Design Process to design an organizer for their favorite hobby. As part of the process, students worked as a team to construct and test a prototype based on internet research, sketches, and the creation of a decision-matrix used to select the best design.
The final presentation of their design solution included creating and presenting a Google presentation along with their prototype and original sketches. This was accomplished through the use of classroom technology including a SMART Board and document camera. Later in the course, students will create a 3D CAD drawing of their prototype using Inventor software.
In part two of PLTW next semester, the curriculum will focus on robotics involving the building, testing, and programming of VEX robotics kits.
Nice job, students!
