School closures can, of course, be an inconvenience, but student safety always comes first. Currently FLSD has used 8 calamity days in 2014. As you are probably aware we are able to use 5 days during the school year without issue.
Currently we are waiting for a decision on the outcome of legislation that would provide a one-time increase in the number of days that schools can take off, without scheduling make up days, because of bad weather. With that said, in the interest of what is best for teaching, learning, and student growth, Firelands will utilize our calamity make-up day on February 28 regardless of what is approved through the Ohio House of Representatives.
February 28, 2014 was previously a Non-Instructional Day – No Students Day. Please plan on students attending school on February 28, 2014. The next scheduled make up days are June 6 and June 9, 2014.
We will keep the FLSD and our community up-to-date as the situation changes.
