SAMS & FES now have an Academic Challenge Team!

Congratulations to the 24 Students from SAMS and the 9 students from FES that made the 5-8 Academic Challenge Team! This is the first time SAMS and FES will participate in Academic Challenge.  Firelands is the first district in Lorain County to participate in AC  for grades 5-8.

Students tried out for the teams by taking a series of tests. The top scoring students were awared a spot on the AC Teams. The students from SAMS team will be coached by Mrs. Muth and Mrs. Copley. The FES team will be coached by Mrs. Schuster.

There will be two competitions, one in February and one in March:

For grades 5 & 6, the dates are:

 Wed, Feb 26 at 9:30….make up day is Friday, Feb 28 in case of bad weather on the 26th

Wed, March 12 at 9:30

 Grades 7 and 8 are:

 Thurs., Feb 27 at 9:30

Thurs., March 13 at 9:30


The competitions are at a new venue this year….Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene, 1617 Milan Rd, Sandusky. Parents, relatives, and friends are welcome to attend!

Topics covered include social studies, geography, math, literature, science, and miscellaneous topics (which includes sports, current events, etc.). Students will also be required to read the following books:

5-6th grade:  Nature Girl by Jane Kelley, How they Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous by Kevin O’Malley
7-8th grade:  Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, How they Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous by Kevin O’Malley
